I was still awake from pulling an “all-nighter” when I received the e-mail that a magazine production class was being offered. I immediately threw down everything I was working on and attempted to register for the class. After a few sappy e-mails to Professor Sisk about how I always wanted this experience but the system would not let me register, I was finally in!
My main story was Assistant Professor Denise McGill’s summer travels to the Mediterranean. It was an honor to be able to talk to her about something other than how frustrating InDesign is. Her excitement and energy about traveling overseas pushed me to want more than what I already know, or what I think I know at least. Hopefully, I will be studying abroad this summer.
The most influential part of the class for me was the visit from Dean Bierbauer, Dr. Carol Pardun, Dr. Samantha Hastings, Terry Dixon and Elaine Taylor. Their expectations and drive for InterCom inspired me even more to do this. I’ve also been exposed to the Library School, and have a newfound respect for everything they’re accomplishing.
I entered this class majoring in print journalism, but I will leave majoring in public relations. The more story topics and events we talked about in class, the more I realized that my heart was leaning toward “selling” those stories and events, not writing about them. In a few short months, this class has changed me professionally, personally and academically; and I am grateful for this experience.
